Sun hand Mystics first loss of the season

UNCASVILLE, Conn. — Tan White scored 15 points and Anete Jekabsone-Zogota added 14 to help Connecticut beat Washington 80-65 on Sunday, handing the Mystics their first loss of the season.

Kara Lawson and Kelsey Griffin had 11 points each and Tina Charles finished with 10 points and eight rebounds for the Sun (2-1), who used a 25-5 run during an 8-minute span of the second half to pull away.

Crystal Langhorne had 16 points to lead Washington (3-1), which was denied its first 4-0 start in franchise history. Marisa Coleman scored 11 points and Katie Smith had 10. Connecticut held Monique Currie, who entered the game scoring a team-best 22 points per game, to six points before fouling out.

The game was tied at 35 with midway through the third period before the Sun started their decisive run. Jekabsone-Zogota capped the spurt with a 3-pointer that pushed the lead to 60-40.

Connecticut tied its season high with nine 3-point field goals.

DeMya Walker’s layup at the first-half buzzer gave the Sun a 31-28 lead at halftime. The Sun overcame 31 percent shooting (10-for-32) in the half, mostly because of its defense. Connecticut forced Washington into two shot clock violations in the second period and held Currie to one point in the half.

Washington led 16-13 after the first period, holding Connecticut to 4-for-17 shooting from the field.
