China tightens security ahead of Asian Games

BEIJING - China has tightened security and set up police checkpoints on roads and waterways connecting Asian Games host city Guangzhou, with just a month left before the opening of the Games.
A total of 132 checkpoints, scattered across Guangdong province and five neighbouring regions, would examine people and vehicles to ensure smooth running of the 16th Asian Games and the Para Games, China Daily reported citing the ministry of public security.
The 2010 Asian Games are scheduled to begin Nov 12.
A ministry official said the security checks would be conducted in a “less disturbing” way to avoid traffic jams and other inconveniences.
The ministry has asked the police, fire and traffic departments to deploy more personnel to prevent major incidents.
