BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA (GaeaTimes.com)- In what turned out to be a rather dramatic Eng vs Aus test, in spite of ending in a draw, the tone is set for the rest of the historic series. Ricky Ponting has earlier spoken about his expectations from the tournament and the pain that his side felt after losing the Ashes the last year. This year the competition is even more crucial as both teams would look to be on a great momentum before the ICC World Cup in 2011.

Batting first England collapsed after a steady start due to the heroics of Peter Siddle who broke the back of the English innings by demolishing the lower middle order with a hat-trick. Australia started well but soon the English bowler’s began to take regular wickets and it looked like both the teams will have almost similar first inning score. Michael Hussey and Brad Haddin posted centuries for Australia and ensured that the test is tilted in their favor. After posting a 220+ lead it looked like England were almost out of contention to win the match till another twist came. Alistair Cook, Andrew Strauss and Jonathan Trott, all posted centuries to not just rescue their side but also give them an outside chance to win the first Eng Vs Aus test.

The fourth Australian innings started rather shakily as Simon Katich was dismissed early on by Stuart Broad. Ricky Ponting came to the crease and built a solid partnership with Shane Watson to make sure there were no more hiccups before the close of play on Day 5 of the first Eng vs Aus test.
