Gary leads No. 10 New Mexixco past No. 13 BYU
PROVO, Utah — Dairese Gary scored 23 points and Darington Hobson blocked a last-second shot as No. 10 New Mexico edged No. 13 BYU 83-81 on Saturday, clinching the top seed in the Mountain West tournament and a share of the regular-season title.
Hobson blocked a shot in the paint by Noah Hartsock with one second left to preserve the lead, and Gary tipped away an inbounds pass as time ran out to give the Lobos (27-3, 13-2) their first win in Provo since 2000.
Michael Loyd scored all of his career-high 19 points in the second half to lead the Cougars (26-4, 11-3). Loyd replaced Jimmer Fredette, the league’s leading scorer, who had six points and played only 59 seconds of the final half because of a stomach problem.
New Mexico is 6-0 against ranked teams this year, and has won a record 13 straight conference games. The Lobos held BYU to 29 percent from behind the 3-point line.
