Charles’ double-double leads Sun past Shock

TULSA, Okla. — Tina Charles had 16 points and 12 rebounds to tie a franchise record with her 12th double-double of the season, leading the Connecticut Sun to a 101-89 victory over the Tulsa Shock on Tuesday night.

Kara Lawson and Sandrine Gruda scored 17 points each and Renee Montgomery and Tan White also scored 16 apiece for the Sun (10-5). Charles, the WNBA leader in double-doubles, had her sixth straight and matched the mark set by Taj McWilliams-Franklin in 2006.

Scholanda Robinson scored 19 points to lead the Shock (3-12), who lost their ninth straight. Kiesha Brown and Jennifer Lacy each scored 12 and Tiffany Jackson had 10.

Connecticut outrebouded Tulsa 41-25 and had 18 second-chance points.

Both teams shot 50 percent from the floor, but the Sun made 83 percent (20 for 24) from the free-throw line while the Shock were at 61 percent (14 for 23).

The Shock pulled to 59-54 with a basket from Robinson with 6:20 left in the third quarter. But the Sun’s 11-4 run, capped by Gruda’s jumper, extended the lead to 70-58 with 3 minutes left in the period.

Tulsa led 14-11 with 4:24 to go in the first quarter after Alexis Hornbuckle had a fastbreak layup after stealing a pass deep in the backcourt.

After a free throw from Natasha Lacy put Tulsa up 21-20, the Sun went on a 10-2 run to take the lead for good.

Connecticut led 50-42 at halftime.
