‘Forest Hills’, former U.S. Open home, safe for now

NEW YORK - The West Side Tennis Club, also known famously as “Forest Hills”, in New York’s Queens area, will not be sold for now.
Home to the U.S. Open from 1923 to 1977, the Queens tennis stadium earned a Grand Slam reprieve Thursday when the club that owns the venue voted against selling to a developer.
According to the New York Daily News, West Side Tennis Club members rejected plans to offer the iconic Forest Hills stadium to developer Cord Meyer, which had hoped to gut the site for condos and a swimming pool.
When news of the proposal first broke in August, many of the club’s members bashed the nine million dollar sale of the 2.5-acre venue.
They dreaded losing the courts that hosted the U.S. Open from 1923 to 1977. But other members noted that money from the deal was needed to patch up dreary finances.
The city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission is now reviewing whether the stadium deserves official protection from major renovations or demolition. (ANI)
